History of NHL Global Series games in Europe
The NHL has been playing games in Europe for decades. The league first travelled overseas for exhibition matches against European clubs and national teams, then began staging regular-season games, usually at the start of the season, in cities such as London, Stockholm, Helsinki, Prague and Berlin.
From exhibitions to regular-season games in Europe
Early trips were friendly in tone. Later, the league moved to meaningful points games, which changed the atmosphere: fans were seeing results that counted in the standings.
Why NHL games in Europe keep returning
European fans are passionate and travel for hockey. The league sees the continent as a growing market and a source of talent, and European arenas fill quickly when NHL teams visit. The Global Series 2026-27 is the latest chapter in that story.
